    Argumentative Segmentation Enhancement for Legal Summarization

    We use the combination of argumentative zoning [1] and a legal argumentative scheme to create legal argumentative segments. Based on the argumentative segmentation, we propose a novel task of classifying argumentative segments of legal case decisions. GPT-3.5 is used to generate summaries based on argumentative segments. In terms of automatic evaluation metrics, our method generates higher quality argumentative summaries while leaving out less relevant context as compared to GPT-4 and non-GPT models

    Question-Answering Approach to Evaluate Legal Summaries

    Traditional evaluation metrics like ROUGE compare lexical overlap between the reference and generated summaries without taking argumentative structure into account, which is important for legal summaries. In this paper, we propose a novel legal summarization evaluation framework that utilizes GPT-4 to generate a set of question-answer pairs that cover main points and information in the reference summary. GPT-4 is then used to generate answers based on the generated summary for the questions from the reference summary. Finally, GPT-4 grades the answers from the reference summary and the generated summary. We examined the correlation between GPT-4 grading with human grading. The results suggest that this question-answering approach with GPT-4 can be a useful tool for gauging the quality of the summary

    Case report: SAF-189s is a potent inhibitor in a lorlatinib-resistant NSCLC patient with acquired compound mutations ALK L1196M and D1203N

    Acquired anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) mutation is the major resistant mechanism to ALK tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. At present, treatment options after acquiring secondary ALK mutations are still limited. Here, we report on a patient with metastatic ALK-rearranged NSCLC who was sequentially treated with ALK TKIs, from crizotinib to lorlatinib, and developed rare acquired compound ALK mutations (L1196M and D1203N) that confer resistance to lorlatinib. Moreover, our report describes the clinical response of an NSCLC patient with these compound mutations to multiple anti-tumor therapies. Among them, the patient was treated with SAF-189s 120 mg daily and had a stable disease lasting 3 months. Chemotherapy (pemetrexed-carboplatin) combined with bevacizumab was then administered. She achieved a partial response, which was maintained for 7 months as the best response. Since both SAF-189s and chemotherapy have shown a clear antitumor effect, they may be viable therapeutic options for these patients. Thus, our study can provide some reference in the treatment of NSCLC patients with ALK L1196M/D1203N compound mutations

    A routing protocol for multisink wireless sensor networks in underground coalmine tunnels

    Traditional underground coalmine monitoring systems are mainly based on the use of wired transmission. However, when cables are damaged during an accident, it is difficult to obtain relevant data on environmental parameters and the emergency situation underground. To address this problem, the use of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) has been proposed. However, the shape of coalmine tunnels is not conducive to the deployment of WSNs as they are long and narrow. Therefore, issues with the network arise, such as extremely large energy consumption, very weak connectivity, long time delays, and a short lifetime. To solve these problems, in this study, a new routing protocol algorithm for multisink WSNs based on transmission power control is proposed. First, a transmission power control algorithm is used to negotiate the optimal communication radius and transmission power of each sink. Second, the non-uniform clustering idea is adopted to optimize the cluster head selection. Simulation results are subsequently compared to the Centroid of the Nodes in a Partition (CNP) strategy and show that the new algorithm delivers a good performance: Power efficiency is increased by approximately 70%, connectivity is increased by approximately 15%, the cluster interference is diminished by approximately 50%, the network lifetime is increased by approximately 6%, and the delay is reduced with an increase in the number of sinks

    A hydrothermal route to water-stable luminescent carbon dots as nanosensors for pH and temperature

    Carbon dots (CDs) as a class of heavy-metal-free fluorescent nanomaterials has drawn increasing attention in recent years due to their high optical absorptivity, chemical stability, biocompatibility, and low toxicity. Herein, we report a facile method to prepare stable CDs by hydrothermal treatment of glucose (glc) in the presence of glutathione (GSH). With this approach, the formation and the surface passivation of CDs are carried out simultaneously, resulting in intrinsic fluorescence emission. The influence of reaction temperature, reaction time and feed ratio of GSH/glc on the photoluminescence property of CDs is studied. The as-prepared CDs are characterized by UV–Vis, photoluminescence, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and transmission electron microscope, from which their structural information and property are interpreted.
